After 15 years of being in love with the Hawaiian Islands, last month we finally pulled the trigger and moved here. It’s a long story, but my wife and I, and our two kids did it. And it was crazy! (A little nerve-racking, but I’m going to do my best to walk you through our trip, and how we did it.) I’ve actually been keeping track of everything, and may even write a short book about our trip planning. To the left is a picture of the Matson container parked in front of our house. It was a very exciting day! (We were so tired of sleeping on air-beds.) The guys who unpacked everything were awesome.
I’d like to start by telling you briefly why we chose to move here (to the Big Island, in Hawaii.) Well, my wife and I have been vacationing here for about 15 years, and it’s hard to explain, but we think the Islands “called-us” here. Every year, it became more depressing when we left our vacation to return back home (Zionsville, Indiana.) We feel guilty saying it this way, because we really loved living in Zionsville. Zionsville is a quant little village on the north side of Indianapolis. It’s not that we were sick of Zionsville, but instead, we were just totally in love with the idea of actually making Hawaii our permanent home.
A string of unplanned events (some good, some bad,) enabled us to ultimately decide to make the move. My Mom’s passing in August of last year proved to be the final reason we moved when we did (January 2008.) You may be considering moving here for different reasons: maybe your career is taking you here, or perhaps you have other reasons, but one thing is certain. You’re probably looking for help in planning and implementing your move to Hawaii. I know I spent months upon months researching everything. And I’ll admit, I had a very difficult time finding good information. So I’m hoping this helps you with your move!
